SELINGAN ISLAND
Borneo Adventure - Part 5
Day 5 – Selingan -Turtle Island
Alarm woke us up at 6am, after a quick cup of coffee, we were off again on a trip up the river with George to visit the ox bow lake of Tanjung Balat. It was a beautiful clear morning, all the birds were singing and active. We could hear Gibbons calling way up in the top of the trees, a sound I love. Our boat boy gently slowed, turning into the narrow channel that would lead to the lake. We again saw many different species of Kingfisher, their striking blue colour is hard to miss. Very soon the view changed and we were right in the middle of a huge lake, which large birds were flying over, a Purple Heron sat uptop of a tree, Oriental Darters, Brahminy Kites and White-Bellied Sea-eagles aplenty.
PURPLE HERON
We did a circuit of the lake and headed back to our lodge for breakfast in the jungle. The boys had set everything up for us to have a full cooked breakfast outdoors with nature all around. A very cheeky Black squirrel kept popping down a tree for a bit of bread. Soon it was time to collect our luggage, say goodbye to the lovely staff and boys, who waved us off on the jetty and left Abai. We set off once again with our guide George, down the Kinabatangan river to Sandakan, where the river eventually meets the sea. We passed many fishing villages on the banks of the river. The boat always slowing right down, because as was explained in a most colourful way by George, the little huts in the water, were toilets and if someone was in one and the bow wave was too strong, they could be washed down river!
When we reached Sandakan jetty our suitcases were taken for storage overnight, we changed boats and said goodbye to George, who handed us back to our previous guide Iro, who was to be with us at Turtle island. Now we were on a high powered speedboat and I loved it. After an hour the most beautiful island came into view, Selingan, the home of the turtles.

GREEN TURTLE
We were shown to our chalet, once again great accomodation with air con! We ate a very fine lunch, afterwards setting off down to the beach, where mats and towels were provided. We spent a couple of hours down there walking along the shore, looking at shell and coral that had been washed up. We could also see where the many Turtles had come up the night before, leaving their tracks. Excitment starting to grow! We also swam in the wonderfully calm and warm Sulu sea, bliss. After we left the beach we decided to have a sleep until dinner, as we had a long night ahead of us.
At 6.30 we met Iro who took us through what was to happen that night, then we watched a video presentation on the conservation work on the islands, there are three of them in fact. Because of the falling numbers of the Green and Hawksbill Turtles, due to poaching. It was decided in 1977 to buy the three islands where it would be illegal to take the eggs or kill the adult Turtles. There are huge fines and long imprisonment for those who break the law. Most that were found breaking these rules were Chinese and Vietnamese!

GREEN TURTLE
I found the video so interesting and could have watched it over and over again.
We were then given a briefing on what would happen that night. After dinner, we would just wait around until we heard the call ‘ Turtles’, where we would be led down the beach by our guide to watch a female Turtle lay her eggs. We could talk in a quiet voice, as they go into a trance like state while laying. An infrared light would be at the back of her to see the eggs drop into the nest, but no light must be shone on her head or eyes. She secretes a mucus that protects her eyes from the sand as she lays, it looks like she is crying. We were also told that they come to the beach where they themselves were hatched between 18 – 30 years ago. They have magnetic crystals in their brain, that enables them to track the ocean floor to find their migratory path (sound familier) When they have eventually finished all their eggs laying, they go back to either Sri Lanka in the Indian ocean or Hawaii in the Pacific.
We went down to the dining room, had our dinner and went outside to wait. And we did, we waited and we waited, which seemed like forever. Then came the call ‘ Turtles’, our guide came for us, took us down to the beach and there she was a large Green Turtle, in her scraped out nest, laying her beautiful pure white eggs, moist and perfectly round.
GREEN TURTLE LAYING HER EGGS
We stood behind her watching as the ranger scooped them out every now and then very gently put them in a bucket. I was surprised that every now and then she let out a grunt. It was a very moving experence and I did cry, I don’t mind admitting. When she had finished laying and scraping the sand back over the nest, the ranger checked her over for barnacles, removing them if possible, as these can cause cancer on the shell, our girl was clear. She was measured and checked for a tag ( only a very small metal no id ) to see if she had been to the beach before, and she had, a local girl with a tag! She had layed 117 eggs that night, but thats not it. Over the next 2 weeks she would come up again to this beach, laying between 1000 – 1500 eggs, staggering, and something I did not realise before.

TURTLE EGGS COLLECTED
We said our goodbyes and thanked the ranger for what had been such a privilege to witness. We were then taken to the hatchery, where 54 baby turtles were in a basket ready to be taken down the beach to be released into the sea. We did this with great difficulty, as the little ones kept turning back and running over my feet. The ranger said the water was cold for them. It felt fine to me, but then they had never felt water before. They were soon on their way, but maybe only one of that release would make it. They are picked of by birds and lizards.

YOUNG TURTLES
We were then taken back to the hatchery to bury the 117 eggs that had been collected in a man made nest, a protective wire net put around it and labeled.
We walked back to our chalet tired but extremely happy. Good luck little Turtles.

Hi everyone, slightly bluer sky this morning, touch of the bright thing as well but still keeps clouding over
and not very warm either.
JULIE just a simply lovely read this morning, and beautiful photos too. Witnessing the egg laying must have been amazing, did you plan to go at that time of year particularly to see it? Totally staggering the number they lay and to see the
little ones running down to the water surely one of the highlights of your trip. As Ann says
this has been so educational for us and I don’t want it to end either! Thank you Ann for posting.
sUSAn so sorry to read of your nightmare weather, I think this will certainly be a summer to forget for
a lot of people.
Do hope all the poorly folk are feeling a lot better, haven’t seen Chrissy for a few days now.
Dx
You can clearly see that bit of cotton or whatever it is dangling down now
Here is a picture of what looks like a thread hanging from the harness – or am I being paranoid

http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes/#
Oh jack you’re right. It does look like thread. That can’t be right.
i find this very worrying. That thread is made to last Three years
Me too Ann – if that really is dangling from the harness it must pose a hazard – I’m sure the camera took a closer look so they must be aware of it
I’ve sent Peter the picture too.
Hello, I’m just on my phone so where on the photo should I try and zoom in on to look please
if I’m seeing the same as jack Its hanging right down the middle of his breast
Yes that is what I can see Ann – so glad you have sent it to Peter – thanks xx
I’m sorry, I think I need to go to specsavers, I can’t see what you’re talking about!
Just had a quick look at footage and I think this is it. I have marked it with a black line

Oh thanks Susan – you are a star xxx
Thanks Susan and Jack – something doesn’t seem quite right there, does it?
Maybe Lady has been trying to remove the harness!!
Fiona – how were the hols – did you get to meet up with Alison at L.G.
Just had a wee peek on pc at photos and not sure if thread or nesting material. Very bad sewing from Roy if thread, not sure if it will just snap if it got caught.
Lady was pecking madly at it though on his return “~”
Thank you Julie for another exciting report. How fantastic was that to be privileged to witness those Turtle eggs being laid and the little ones being released. What an amazing time you have had, certainly a once in a lifetime holiday. Love the pics Julie they are amazing and what memories to keep. I too, dont want your story to end and have loved reading all about your adventures. Thank you again Julie for letting us be part of it and thank you Ann for putting it together xxxxx
i second that.
george.
Hi everybody hope you are all well today,
Julie your pics and stories from borneo are amazing what memories you must have, thank you for sharing them with us.
went up the other day to the pond to see Edna and Eric and the cygnets and they are looking great as you can see, usually some of them are taken when very small to foxes, but no she still has seven and getting bigger every day.
Thanks for the photos and update on Edna and Eric – lovely to hear.
Hope all seven cygnets continue to thrive
Marion x
great to see,
thank you Ann.
george.
Hi Ann, good to see you.
Awww I am so pleased to see Edna and Eric and their babies, they look fantastic Ann. Cant believe she still has her 7 cygnets. They look none the worse for the awful ordeal they went through
Brilliant pics of them Ann xxx
brilliant Ann. They’ve done so Well to have seven. X
That’s great news Ann. Lovely photos too xxx
Thanks Ann – they are doing so well to keep seven – hope they all survive now to fledging xx
Fantastic Ann, what a lovely outcome after all Edna and Eric have been through. Wow seven, fingers crossed for them, they are gorgeous. Thanks for the update xxx
After last year Ann she deserves success with her cygnets. Fingers crossed they grow
to fledging.
Dx
Just got this screen grab, you can definitely see the cotton hanging down. Very worrying.

© SWT http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes/
it makes me feel sick. Its definitely thread isn’t it. Nesting stuff would have fell off by now.
Looks like it Ann
Has anyone phone Lowes, or do you want me to call them and ask about it?
they know about it because they’ve zoomed in. Don’t suppose there is much they Will tell you. They won’t have a clue. Not a lot they can do now anyway. The damage is surely done.
but phoning won’t do any harm either. Yeah phone.
ok xx
Called Lowes but my comment went onto the next page so just copying her now
Just spoke to Jonathan and they weren’t aware of it. He will speak to Emma and then take it from there. I did say that it looked like the thread from the harness rather than the cotton stitches as is brown and the stitches are white.
Thanks so much Susan – strange because I am sure they zoomed in but perhaps just coincidence – anyway now they can zoom at every opportunity and try to establish what it is
No worries Jack, better to be safe than sorry. Typical he is sitting with his back to us now, lol xx
I can’t thank Julie and Ann enough for bring her holiday reports to us on the blog ~ I’m loving every minute and can’t wait on the next installment.
We had an enjoyable time at Aviemore. The weather was awful on the Sunday and Tuesday. Monday was ok not lovely but just showery rather than torrential rain!
We went to the Highland Wildlife Park on Sunday. We sat and watched Walker and Akrtos the polar bears playing in their pool for ages. They seem to have such great fun together. The staff have to separate them every so often though by putting one of them indoors and leaving the other out as they constantly play fight with each other that they get exhausted! For polar bears to be such solitary creatures in the wild, it is amazing to witness these two young males. Photos to follow once I remember to retrieve the camera from the car. Most of the animals were sheltering from the rain and who could blame them? We did manage to see the Highland Tigers with their little kittens, no photo though because by now everything was steamed up! We never saw the wolves and their cubs as by this time the rain wasn’t taking any time to come down. At this point I realised that my waterproof jacket, was no longer waterproof! We were there only about 3 hours but I was soaked so we decided to go and hopefully maybe return an other time during the “summer”. As Bob said, just seeing the two polar bears so happy and relaxed was worth the entrance money alone.
I met up with Alison at Loch Garten on Monday and was privileged to be taken to the forward hide(where the two duty osprey watchers are) where she was volunteering with Valerie Webber from the Loch Garten Bloggers on FB. It was such a treat, I’d never even noticed the forward hide before when visiting. The VC up there is so noisy compared to Lowes ~ I think because they are much further away from the ospreys! I stayed a couple of hours with Alison and Valerie and learnt quite a bit about EJ and Odin and their chicks!
Earlier on the day whilst the kids and Bob were kayaking at Loch Insh, I had a wee walk to myself (after a delicious cake and hot chocolate) to the side of the church to see if I could see the ospreys there. I’d been told there weren’t any as the nest had failed but I had to go and look for myself. I convinced myself I could see a little white head in the nest but this gentleman who was there assured me both ospreys were gone ~ just at that, the male osprey flew into the nest and the female got up OUT of the nest and flew off, followed by a few seconds later by the male. I’m sure he’d brought a fish with him. I was tempted at that point to stick my tongue out at the gentleman but thought I’d better not!!
Hi Fiona,
Sounds as though you enjoyed the break, in spite of the weather. The number of times we’ve been round the Highland Wildlife Park in the rain, but we do enjoy it there and it has changed so much over the years.
Glad you met up with Alison – what a thrill to go to the other hide, lucky you!
Love the story of the Loch Insh ospreys – you were very restrained not to have put your tongue out! Bet you felt smug though
Marion x
Oh Fiona – that sounds fantastic – not the rain! The visit to L.G. lucky you to be taken to the forward hide and meet Alison and then to spot the ospreys at Loch Insh – how clever of you!
Hi Fiona, glad you all had a good time. So pleased that you met up with Alison and you got to go to the forward hide. I bet she is really enjoying being there. How lucky were you to see the ospreys in what was supposed to be an empty nest. xxx
So pleased you had a lovely time at Loch Garten and saw Alison and got VIP treament. I bet you were over the moon at seeing the Ospreys on the nest at Loch Insh. Think I would of stuck out my tongue LOL. Such a shame about the weather when you visited Highland Wildlife park but so pleased you saw Walker and Akrtos. xxx
Great Fiona, well done for acting like the lady that you are and not sticking your tongue out!
Sounds like you had a fabulous time
Just spoke to Jonathan and they weren’t aware of it. He will speak to Emma and then take it from there. I did say that it looked like the thread from the harness rather than the cotton stitches as is brown and the stitches are white.
ok. Thanks Susan.
Thanks Susan. xxx
Just got a call from the garage – my car is ready!!!!!! So dashing off to get it and then to get the dogs out for a proper walk. See you later xx
i don’t know if any of you have followed the lennox story. He was a dog taken from his family because he looked like a pit bull. He was killed this morning in belfast. They had held him for 2 years.
No I hadn’t Ann, what a shame xx
Didn’t know about him but that sounds terribly sad
Dx
Ann – that is awful
I signed a petition to save him. But it proved worthless. Shame.
I can clearly see the thread hanging down the center of Rocket’s chest. The best picture is the one Jacqueline posted at 11:21. Enlarge it.
Think if the harness were sewn with white thread, it would now be brown anyway. What a worry and I have a busy day so won’t find out a thing until later….if we ever find out.
They kill pit bull look alikes in Belfast??? One of my last dogs was part pit. What a sweetheart, that is, after I got him over his separation anxiety. Trashed the house on a regular basis for about a year.
Oh Linda where did you get the strength from to allow it to trash your home for a year. What a massive big heart you have xxx
SUSAN, He was very selective in his trashing. He didn’t destroy furniture or chew up mattresses. He loved ripping up papers…telephone books, mail, magazines etc and FOOD.
He regularly swept my kitchen counters with his paws to see what he could reach. Must have eaten 100 #s of butter. The funniest was when I came home one day and found a trail of brown sugar going from my kitchen and up the steps. There he was in the middle of Claire’s bed eating a 2# bag of brown sugar.
Put him on a medication called Clomicalm and it really helped. Plus I came home after a particularly hard night shift and found ripped papers from one end of the house to the other. I was so upset that I reached down, picked up a 2 quart water bowl and dumped it on his head….I think that finally got his attention. LOL. Turned out to be one of my nicest dogs.
LOL Oh Linda that sounds so funny, love when you dumped the water on his head, lol oh bless him xxxxx
He was just a big attention seeker Linda so when he got the water dumped on his head thought well she certainly
knows I’m here I don’t have to be a bad boy anymore! LOL! Dx
Linda you are a very special lady and I’m so glad you are back with us xxx
12.57 Camera just zooms into Blue44′s chest. Definitely brown thread hanging from harness. Quite long, down to his claws
12-55, I have just switched on and put the nest cam up to a beautiful back scene of Lunan.
Now a close up, is that a thread hanging down from his chest, from his back pack?. Yes. Must go and see the the most recent posts before catching up with yesterday and all todays.
Lowes have just zoomed in, looks like thread.

Thanks Jan, yes you can see the length of it hanging down to his talons

13-13, just read back through the mornings posts and noted it was JACKS at 10-46 who first mentioned the thread. Camera keeps zooming in. Nulan tucking in to his lunch, oblivious of us all concerned for him.
SUSAN, well captured photos of the thread.
Looks like he has the end of the tread in his mouth at the moment as he is eating the fish

© SWT http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes/
I seen that Jan. it is now at the back of his talons while he is eating
CLIP…. BROWN THREAD HANGING FROM HARNESS
Hope they soon come up with a plan to sort that thread.
13-17, whatever fish that is, its got a strong backbone!! He is making good work of eating the flesh.
Have to go, will look in later, and catch up on yesterday as well as from now on.
Hi, Ann,. Re names. I’ve never called our lad a name and I am quite happy to go on calling him B44 for ever. I liked Laird but thought of him as 7Y too. I just thought that if the blog is going to choose a name it would be nice to do it in time for his first flights. That’s all. No worries at all from me.
I’ve lost the cam and so am looking a the brown thread from your photos and clips. i am wondering if there are so many people on the campsite now – it’s the week of Bastille Day -using their laptops etc that the signal is not always strong enough.
hi all,
just catching up on the posting.
been looking at the cotton hanging
from b 44 if they are going to do any
thing about it they had better be quick
as he is getting stronger every day.
george.
13.53 Lady’s back on the nest but I didn’t see her arrive
13.55 Intruder. Lady mantling and alarm calling quite frantically
i am very glad to see they have nice calm
weather at lowes its monsoon like here,
thunder and lightning as well.
roll on winter.lol.
Hi George, sounds horrendous weather. Hope you and Josh are well xxx
13.59 Danger seems to have past now
lady seems calm now.
george.
must get to the shops now, back soon xxx
Julie what a wonderful post and thank you Ann for putting it together. I loved reading about the turtles, absolutely fascinating, I am not surprised you cried I would of too. The pics are brilliant, I did not realise they laid such a huge amount of eggs. Thank you Julie for another wonderful day of your dream holiday. I was with you all the way. xxx
Just got back on. 14-21 Nice close up of Rocket/Nulan, with I assume Lady at the back.
14-22 Lady? flies off.
Before I go and catch up with yesterday, I will tell you the reason I left quickly earlier, was that the Cleaner rang me.
She went to have the dressing changed yesterday, and they surprised her, by taking out the drain and stitch`s and then packing her.!!
). He said now I have something to tell you. She closed her eyes and prayed hard. He told her to open her eyes and look at him. She did, and he was smiling, and said its not cancer. She wept at the news. It was a seriously bad abscess. She has to go back for the packing to be changed, and they took another sample for testing for any infection, and put her on anti-biotics. He will keep an eye on her from now on, and at any time she has even the slightest pain/discharge, she is to go back to the Clinic immediately. Although still in pain from the work done yesterday, she is one very happy bunny .
She was expecting that to be done on Friday.
Her Consultant held her hand and the nurses held her around her shoulders (cuddles
Now going to read yesterday, make notes on the way. Will be back here later.
Lorna wonderful news, so pleased for her, what a relief for you all.
LORNA – what wonderful news, so very pleased for her
Marion x
JAN and MARION, the relief in her voice was very noticeable as compared to when I visited her on Sunday.
What threw me though was her thanking me for being here and listening. I must admitted I did some quick swallowing to be able to speak to her. She has siblings, but I think sometimes you can say more to non relatives than you can to relations. Bless her.
She obviously values your friendship and support at this difficult time, LORNA – I think you are right about being able to talk better to non-relatives. You are obviously a good listener and I think we all need that at times.
Great news Lorna, I bet she was so relieved. Nice to hear something good for a change.
Dx
Isnt it just DEIRDRE. I know she was absolutely petrified that it would be cancer. I am so pleased for her.
Lorna – I am so pleased for her – what a huge weight of her mind – and yours too xxx
JACKS, her voice was so different on the phone today, even when she said she had to go back to the clinic yesterday evening, as the packing wasnt holding the leak from the wound (size of a 10 pence piece, she said).
Yes we, on the Committee are so pleased for her.
what a relief. The best news. Xxx
That’s such good news Lorna xx
