20 FUN BUTTERFLY FACTS
September 9, 2012 in Wildlife Village by Shirley D

Good morning everyone,

- Butterflies range in size from a tiny 1/8 inch to a huge almost 12 inches.
- Butterflies can see red, green, and yellow.
- Some people say that when the black bands on the Woolybear caterpillar are wide, a cold winter is coming.
- The top butterfly flight speed is 12 miles per hour. Some moths can fly 25 miles per hour!

5. Monarch butterflies journey from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of about 2,000 miles, and return to the north again in the spring.
6. Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees.
7. Representations of butterflies are seen in Egyptian frescoes at Thebes, which are 3,500 years old.
8. Antarctica is the only continent on which no Lepidoptera have been found.

9. There are about 24,000 species of butterflies. The moths are even more numerous: about 140,000 species of them were counted all over the world.
10, The Brimstone butterfly (Gonepterix rhamni) has the longest lifetime of the adult butterflies: 9-10 months.
11. Some Case Moth caterpillars (Psychidae) build a case around themselves that they always carry with them. It is made of silk and pieces of plants or soil.
12. The caterpillars of some Snout Moths (Pyralididae) live in or on water-plants.

13. The females of some moth species lack wings, all they can do to move is crawl.
14. The Morgan’s Sphinx Moth from Madagascar has a proboscis (tube mouth) that is 12 to 14 inches long to get the nectar from the bottom of a 12 inch deep orchid discovered by Charles Darwin.
15. Some moths never eat anything as adults because they don’t have mouths. They must live on the energy they stored as caterpillars.
16. Many butterflies can taste with their feet to find out whether the leaf they sit on is good to lay eggs on to be their caterpillars’ food or not.

17. There are more types of insects in one tropical rain forest tree than there are in the entire state of Vermont.
18. In 1958 Entomologist W.G. Bruce published a list of Arthropod references in the Bible. The most frequently named bugs from the Bible are: Locust: 24, Moth: 11, Grasshopper: 10, Scorpion: 10, Caterpillar: 9, and Bee: 4.
19. Some people eat insects – called “Entomophagy”(people eating bugs) – it has been practiced for centuries throughout Africa, Australia, Asia, the Middle East, and North, Central and South America. Why? Because many bugs are both protein-rich and good sources of vitamins, minerals and fats.
20. Butterflies and insects have their skeletons on the outside of their bodies, called the exoskeleton. This protects the insect and keeps water inside their bodies so they don’t dry out.

So our Beautiful Boy is on his way, May the Wind stay beneath his wings, and the Sun steer him safe to his Journeys end.
God Speed Little Man. xx
Both the Hellgate Ospreys are very vocal just now, The one with the drooping wing has just flown off and returned safely, so it’s flight doesn’t seem too affected.
SHIRLEY. Love your post on Butterflys today, I have a soft spot for Butterflys as my mother Loved them, They are a beautiful remender of her, sadly there hasn’t been many about this year.
Just back from our walk. So our Rocket is coming down the East coast, I will keep my eyes peeled. We kept our eyes to the beautiful Blue skies today, but the only bird of prey was a female Kestral.

Here’s a couple of photos taken on our walk.
Lovely photos Julie, could do woth some of that nice blue stuff up here. LOL
Lovely scenery Julie – so pastoral – yes it is definitely eyes to skies now xxx

Did anyone spot the Osprey on the Black Bears Planet Earth Live?
Yes JULIE. I was waiting for the oven timer to go, and saw it, and the little update at the end where Jewels cubs have grown. Lovely.
Yes!! I saw it – just a brief glimpse as it took off from the top of that tree – lovely sight! xx
A little country cutie.

Thirsty weather.
Aww Julie they are very cute! A bit late for such young calves isn’t it? That little one is looking right at you. xxx
Aren’t you watching the race Jill? I’m holding back dinner because Tim Is glued! There were lots of pregnant ewes as well. It is very good grazing in this area and the Autumns are getting warmer too. Time for the little ones to gain strength and weight before winter arrives. Off to dish up, have a good evening my friend.
Luv me xxx
Oh YES Julie I was watching the race with one eye and the cam with the other – multitasking! lol lol I’m still a bit worried about Crown over at Hellgate so was watching to see how she was coping.
So glad your comp problems seem to be cured now! Have a good evening, love me xxx
Lovely cute pictures, Julie. I’m glad you managed to sort out your computer.
You and me both Joyce! With the help of Jill. Give my love to Tony and a big (((hug))) xxx
Cute pics. Julie Thanks.

SHIRLEY – what a very interesting and informative post today. I’ve really got interested in butterflies this year, and loved your photos too! Thanks for all your hard work.
Well, it’s good to know that the boy is on his way south – must be a rail enthusiast!! Hope he and Laddie have a safe journey there and back again. Safe flight and good fishing boys!!
Tony and I have been up to Kirklees Light Railway Gala Day today – seven different little engines running, and a beautiful day to be out and about. We saw lots of butterflies along the way, and then Tony spotted a huge dragonfly as we were travelling through the woodland.
We also had a very clear view of Emley Moor Mast. It is the tallest freestanding structure in the UK, and the 25th tallest tower in the world – 1,084 feet (330 metres)

Joyce love those little engines. I bet Tony was in his element, wasn’t he, lol.
Nothing in the world compares to the smell of steam engines, wonderful. E x
Lovely pics Joyce – reminds me of the trip I did on the Romney Hythe & Dymchirch railway from Dungeness to Hythe and went to the museum there. Glad you had good weather for it. Hope Tony is coping – do you have a date for his op yet?
Have a good evening both of you, love Jill xx
You might not believe this Joyce but when I enlarged your picture I swear I would smell the trains! Glad you enjoyed a day out while you can – the weather is set to change tomorrow xxx
Brill Pics Joyce and what a lovely day you and Tony got xxx
Hi Jack, and Jill , it’s lovely to hear from you both. you don’t looked your age either.
Julie, beautiful photos great scenery, thank you!
Nick, thanks for yesterday photos they were beautiful.
Deirdre, love the blessing of St Francis of Assisi . Thank you for sharing with us.
hope you have had a lovely time with your family today.
Hi Marion, hope you are well. thanks alot for all the links.
Love xxxx
Hi Johanna! I hope your back is not too painful now – you needed some of our warm sunshine this afternoon – got up to 83 degrees here – now its overcast but still hot and sticky – might rain later.xxx
Thank you Johanna! Hope your back is improving – have you got one of those little bags you heat up in the microwave – that could ease it – don’t overdo the lifting until it gets better – not easy in your job I know xxx
Have got Hellgate up, and about 11-15isham their time, Crown Royal flew off the nest leaving Squish on his own who flew of shortly afterwards. Whilst both were gone, the camera was panning around the base of the nest, then came back when Crown flew back, about 11-19am their time. Then the camera zoomed in on that small red pickup truck in the car park. Zoomed in really close, then drew back. Crown still alone on the nest. Read the Osprey cam FB blog on the right, and it seems a fish got lost over the side, maybe thats what the camera was looking for. Frieght train hooter blowing, so it will be passing Hellgate nest soon.
My dinner is ready now. Edit: Had to wait for the freight train and here it comes.
Will look in later.
LORNA I’m not surprised the camera was panning down on the ground – YES Stanley came in with a fish and Squish and Crown were fighting for it and it dropped over the side! Squish was flat on his front with his head down over the edge looking for it – I thought he might fly down and retrieve it but no – just started shouting again for more!
Just been to Osprey Cams Facebook and seen that update by Erick. He doesn’t sound too worried about Crown’s droopy wing but although she seems to be flying quite well and fishing for herself, here……..I just worry that she may not be able to sustain a longer flight when she migrates. She will probably have to make a lot more stops along the way than is usual. She’s off the nest now and Squish is home alone and sqwawking away. Long train in the background.
JILL, I was going to bring the link over, but see you have already read it. At this moment Crown Royal is on the nest, shouting for food, train gone.
Good evening All. MARION, you are a Star! What a superbly written article in the Mirror on line that you managed to bring here for us and also, what fabulous photos, especially the one of Ceulan being hand fed not so very long ago. Thank you for that link, and also for others here. I haven’t read them all yet, but did read about Ipswich and their archeological find of that ancient cemetery, I find these pieces of information so interesting.
I see JULIE that you were able to enjoy one more day of glorious sunshine for your walk today, lovely photos of a part of Sussex that I used to know quite well. Not like that here, still very warm, but dull and overcast for most of the day with low cloud, so definitely wouldn’t see any Ospreys even if they were flying over this way. On that subject, I keep thinking about Chrissy and wondering how she is. I remember last year, her often telling us she had seen Ospreys as they passed over her garden on their migration. Well, CHRISSY, if you are looking in, I hope you will see some again this year.
Next Tuesday, I shall be journeying up to Chichester, Sussex, to visit friends, just for four days. Shall definitely keep my eyes on the skies – just in case although with a poor weather forecast, who knows! Shall keep my fingers crossed JILL for it all to settle down ready for you next L&G trip.
Thanks ROSY my dear! its got a couple of weeks to settle down so I am keeping everything crossed too!! xx
Wayheyyyy Hamilton just won the Italian Grand Prix!!! Unfortunately Button was a DNF but good on ya Lewis!!!
Hi Lorna, train not moving very fast, in fact It’s at a standstill, run out of coal…or driver wanting to view nests round there!! I don’t really like going onto Hellgate with Crown as it is now. 71 whoever that may be just flown onto nest had to turn sound down, doing my dogs heads-in…. and mine. lol E x
#71 is Squish, Eileen. Squish the Greedy, still trying to make up for all the time he was behind !
Thank you B, I didn’t like the names so never kept up with them. They were 1 2 and 3 to me.
E x
Feet up cup of tea and the closing night of the olympics. what a wonder it has been. well done everyone “~”
Mee too Paula – my dinner is about ready so I’m off to eat and watch the closing ceremony. Its been a blast – I’ve enjoyed every minute of watching!
Update from Rutland with a couple of lovely photos – “There’s still an Osprey in Rutland!”:

Great Pics Marion xx
Blue 44′s page and track on Google Earth have been updated. See Blue 44 migration
Thank you Marion for all your links and to Tiger, wonder if he knew how far he was going to have to travel, he’d would rather stayed at home, and let Daddy feed him?
E x
I do not think that they know how far they got to go. I think that they get an urge to fly south. What triggers that urge is not too well understood.
Hi Jack , nice to hear from you. you don’t look your age either.
Julie, lovely photos
Jill, Deirdre, got a great idea, about the hot water bottle. So sorry to hear about Crown , will say a prayer for her so she will recover quickly!
Deirdre, love the blessing of St Francis of Assisi. I had visted his shrine in Italy.
Marion, hope you are well. many thanks for all the links.
Nick, thanks for the lovely photos .
good night all. xxxx
Johanna – I do hope your back feels more comfortable soon. Take care of yourself and no heavy lifting at work.

Hello Everyone, thanks Shirley for your informative post on Butterflies, they are so colourful, unfortunately I only know a couple by sight, was surprised to read they could travel 12mph, and moths at 25, the only Moth I could recognise is the Cinnobar remember Jan posting a photo of one some time back, and by pure chance we saw one a few days later at Tentsmuir, without Jan’s photo I would have thought it a butterfly. Definitely learn lots here.
ANN: I enjoyed your posts about and from Jane Lyons still have Friday’s to read but what dedication to have.
SUSAN: Your posts were great too, amazing how well Phoenix is doing, she is a real fighter. Also found your one about the Jewel Wasp fascinating, evil but such beautiful colouring, I watched the Video, thanks for that found it interesting. wish I’d paid more attention to Wildlife in the past.
JOHANNA: guess I’ve missed you now, but hope your back will improve soon, do take Care xx
Enjoy the rest of your Evening All. God Speed Safely Laddie and Lunan xxx
