FRIDAY 18TH MAY 2012
May 18, 2012 in Wildlife Village by Ann B

Good morning. To all those on their way up to the bloggers meet on Sunday – safe travels. The weather looks promising for the big day. Maybe we will even get an egg hatching? Who knows?Today I bring you another incredible picture by Paul Jessett. This bird flew in above his and Eths head totally oblivious to them. The bird is unrung so we have no more information. Its an absolute cracker. Look at the size of the whale/fish it has caught!!
NO FISH
02.03 Lady isn’t getting much sleep with the rain. she keeps shaking her head. 05.41 logged in to see a quick visit by our boy – no fish or changeover, Lady had a good wing stretch & flap, a power poo, and settled back down on the eggs!! I imagine she may have placed her breakfast order at the same time!! 06.27 – Lady on the nest facing 10 o’clock. She looks very wet, bless her. 07.01 Lady gets up shakes her wet feathers and flies off for a break and back. 07.38 – She’s sticking like glue to those eggs this morning. Geese honking and birds singing in the background. 09 06 WEATHER LOOKS GRIM AT LOWES – YOU CAN SEE THE RAIN ON THE FEATHERS 12 25 LOVELY CLOSE UPS AT LOWES – THANK YOU SWT STILL SEE THE RAINDROPS ON THE FEATHERS – ALSO THE LITTLE FLOWER IN THE NEST 12-38 Laddie up and moves around, turns the eggs and settled down again. 12-47, looks as if it is still raining at Lowes. 12.52 – Laddie calling softly, while small bird is stripping the material on the mic. 12.56 – Lady flies onto the nest, Laddie flies off and our girl gets onto the eggs. Very smooth changeovers now. 13 57 ISLA still wet through, calling for Laddie to bring in a fish I think,,or to take over egg sitting,, 14-55, cant see who is on the eggs, weather awful camera doesnt seem to be focused properly. went full screen, even worse. Ah movement. Looks like Lady yes its Lady, can see the necklace and V on her head 14-59 has turned to face the right, but looking around. 15 11 Just saw LADDIE skimming the Loch, so did ISLA left hand side of the webcam,,he doesn’t look to be having much luck at the moment,, but at least he is trying,,bless him,, 15.21 What on earth did he bring to the nest???? 15-22 , Oh my lordy, what has Laddie brought in now? Mind her tail!! Make up your mind where that cot rail is going to be put. Yes you can look at us looking at you. Watch out Lady. Now its like a cycle handle bar in front of her. 15-25 and he`s off, leaving Lady to sort out the woodwork. 15-27, That really is a big piece with bits and bobs of twigs attached to it, and Lady is having a job to sort it out away from the front of her. 15 22 LADDIE lands on the nest with a humongous lump of grass with a large branch attached to it,, NOT what ISLA was expecting folks,, ” WHERE’S ME FISH”? 15.25 He can’t do anything with it, so he leaves it right in front of Lady for her to deal with!! He’s hysterical. 15.26 She’s trying so hard to deal with the obstacle without getting up off her eggs ~ he’s such a numpty at times! 15 26 ISLA trying to get ride of the, as Lorna has said “Cot Rail”,, that LADDIE brought in,, What is he like,,, 15-37, Lady has moved it a little bit back, just a midgies whisker, from in front of her. 16 03 GEESE JUST FLOWN ACROSS THE LOCH 16 04 LADY UP AND MOVED AROUND – LOOKS SO WET STILL 16 12 LADDIE comes in with another stick,, ISLA not happy at all, she is giving it large to the lad,,,he deserves it now,, she wants HER FISH !!! he didn’t ever offer changeover, the rotter ! 16 44 Lowes having a scan to the right of the nest,, Looking for LADDIE I bet folks,,, 18.02 – Night cam on. 19-38, Lady still on the nest. I see that stick has finally been moved away quite a bit, although I think there is still part of it there (looks like a giant wishbone).20-29, Lady up, turns the eggs and settles back down again. Looks drier there at the moment. 21.04 Lady has been calling a bit more forcefully, perhaps she sees Laddie with a fish 21.07 LADY SHOUTING 21.13 Lady keeps nodding off with head falling forward in between shouting 21.25 Lady struggling to stay awake. 21.33 Lady is still shouting 21-47 Infrared cam on.. Lady still calling. To my knowledge, no fish delivery today. 22.05 Lady flat out keeping her eggs warm. I think she has her eyes closed, but not quite sure 22.31 Im getting no webcam at Lowes, says server not found again 22.41 Webcam still down at Lowes 22.43 Just checked the other SWT Cams and they are all down 23.11 I think we will all be having an early one tonight

Our local paper the Press and Journal have ran a story today on the “love triangle” at LG – sorry I only got quick look as was at work so didn’t read all – I think it was to do with the paternity of the first hatched egg!!
Overnight nest activity update from SWT ~ thank you!
http://blogs.scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/osprey/
Thanks Fiona and thanks, as you say, to SWT – good to know what happened whilst the webcam was down.
Marion x
Thanx for posting the link Fiona. Good to know whats been happening as you say.
14-54, it looks as though it might be raining at Lowes, as there are smears on the camera.
14-55, Laddie up and off the eggs. Camera close up of the eggs.
14-56, Lady back and on to the eggs.
Nottingham peregrine chick being fed:

What smashing photos at the top. Aren’t we lucky to have such wonderful photographers posting them. I loved the water buffalo as well. The pictures from Dyfi put LOLT to shame.
Our local paper had an item on the destruction of the eggs in the goshawk nest in the Derwent Valley. Horrible to think that human beings can be so callous.
Hi Erica,
Has read about that earlier today in Wildlife Extra news:
http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/derwent-goshawk.html
Unbelievable that man can be so destructive
Marion
we are so lucky. Excellent photographers.
16-20, Lady on the eggs, calling and its still windy as well.
I shall be out this evening. Its the last evening for the Winter Season of the Hort. monthly meetings.
Some of our Villagers will be in Perth/Dunkeld area now, or nearly there.
Hope they all had a safe journey and better weather than Lowes has had today.
I am now off to get an early dinner. Will look in when I get back.
17 11pm
ISLA stands and turns the eggs and a good stretch.

ISLA stands, bends her head down and tilts her head to the eggs, is this the first sign she is listening to the sounds inside our three precious eggs? she doesn’t turn the eggs, just moves position and hunkers down.

Good evening dear Villagers, just a flying visit to say thank you ANN for today’s nestcap and all those lovely photos, specially the one of the Gooseander and all those babies. Talking of photos, what a bobby dazzler is little Naomi, and growing so fast.
LORNA I daresay you will be gone by now, but just in case you do look in later, thank you for telling me all about yourself. I often see a signpost to Buckland Monachorum when I’m on the bus going to Tavistock and I have been to Bere Alston, a lovely part of the country. So, you are a real Devonian. Who knows, perhaps one day our paths might cross some time in the future which would be lovely.
CHRISSY I had a thought about Laddie and his rather poor fishing activity today. Perhaps he is thinking that he will look after the family while Lady does the fishing! Well, we all know how much he likes sitting on those eggs don’t we!
MARION Thank you for the links today, I’m hoping to have time now the packing is almost done, to sit down and read them.
To everyone here, I wish you all a good week while I am away. I can’t pack my laptop, so you will have a break from my ‘meanderings’ here, but thank you for looking after our Village. Lots of love and hugs, Rosy.xxxxxxx
Hi Rosy pet,,
WELL,,
That’s one way of looking at it pet,, but I don’t think ISLA would allow that,, she is a bit of a traditionalist and likes things her way,, LADDIE will just have to toe the line and buck up,, or “Get the Roth of the ISLA Monster”, laughing,, we ain’t heard nothing yet pet,, wait until the first chick hatches,, ISLA will go into overdrive with orders for LADDIE to follow,, and wow betide him if he doesn’t,,,
I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of ISLA,, would you pet,, laughing,,
Safe journey pet,, have you seen the card I posted above today,,
much love

Hi everybody, case all packed ready to go, excited much!!!!!!!
Another little bobblehead at Garten great news, hope something will happen at Lowes this weekend fingers crossed.
Had a terrible experience this afternoon in my garden,a magpie took a baby starling,I heard all the commotion and looked out to see about ten starlings on my neighbours roof, screeching and squawking ,and there on the top of the hut next door was the magpie murdering the the little baby, omg I was beside myself I know that is what happens but was not nice to see.
Wishing all of those going to Lowes a safe journey, and for those who can’t make it,we will take loads of pics for you. lots of love Ann xxxx
Have a great time Ann – look forward to everyone’s photos and all the news.

Just had the sparrowhawk in the garden here – don’t think it caught anything, but it was all so fast I can’t be sure! It flew through, a cat ran out from under the bushes and I ran out to chase both away!!
Marion x
See you in the morning Ann. xx
I had a Sparrowhawk in my garden this afternoon grab a fledgling Blackbird, so I dashed out shouting at it and it just dragged it under some bushes, so I went closer shouting and it flew away leaving the Blackbird. I couldn’t find the Blackbird, but there was a rustling as though it might have flown away – I hope it did and is somewhere safe now. I know the Sparrowhawk has to feed itself and its family, but I’d rather not see what it’s doing!!
CHRISSY – a quick question – there is a YouTube video clip of 2nd chick at LG – am I allowed to post the link?
Marion x
No Marion pet,,
Not without Richard Taxtons permission pet,, sorry,, it’s an R.S.P.B. site pet,, so NO !

Today’s update from Rutland – mentions the sighting of the osprey at Arlington Reservoir in Sussex over the last few days and it appears it might have a blue ring, so wondering if it might be a 2010 one of theirs.

SHOUTING ON LOWES NEST – MUST BE LADY!
CHRISSY – have you seen my question above re LG video clip?
Just read your answer – thanks Chrissy

Hi BRIAN, love those two squirrels, specially the one posing for the camera. I know they aren’t red squirrels, but I still enjoy watching them whenever they appear.
CHRISSY dear, how are you feeling today? Do so hope you are not overdoing things. Thank you for your good wishes for my travels tomorrow, must confess it does feel a bit daunting even though this will be the fourth time I’ve done it. Shall keep my mind on our birds, crossing fingers that there will be a safe hatching. Chrissy, I have looked back at your posts for today, but can’t see the ‘card’ that you mention, what sort of card was it? I should love to look at it if possible.
Hello ALISON, such happy news of a second chick safely arrived in this world up at Loch Garten, thank you for bringing it to us.I see that Lady is still shouting, what on earth is Laddie doing? Perhaps all the rain and wind has stirred up the water of the loch so much that it is very difficult to see any fish there at all. I feel we should give Laddie the benefit of the doubt just in case he has been trying to catch supper.
Hi ROSY
Chrissy posted a link to a JL card right at the end of the daily post today, before we start our comments
Hope this helps

Chrissy, I do LG videos but always put Copyright RSPB on them just because I recorded it from their webcam.
There are a few of the chicks so you will see them if you go onto by YouTube account, 444ACE444.
I think those who record on the RSPB Forum do the same, but I’m sure no-one has been told to by RSPB. I just started doing it because I do it for SWT like that. I don’t think the RSPB post any videos – they are all done by people watching the webcam.
Hi Rosy pet,,
Just the same really pet,, but I’ve put it to the back of my mind for the best part,, just have to get on with things don’t you pet,,
Yes as Marion says,, the card is at the end of our daily post pet,, all the cards usually are pet,,
just be careful and leave plenty of time for you to get from train to train pet,, no rushing,, no acidents please pet,, and try and sleep on the train if you can the time will pass quickly then,,
stay safe pet,, and above all have fun and enjoy yourself,,

Good evening, MARION. Thank you so much for your good wishes re: my travelling tomorrow they are so appreciated.. With so many good wshes having come my way from so many wonderful friends here, it should be the smoothest journey ever
.Thank goodness, Monty has managed to deliver his fish successfully over at Dyf iwithout being mobbed by crows, a buzzard and sundry other hungry birds Marion. I felt really sad when I read your account from Dyfi this morning, all that effort to catch a fish for his lady, only to have it stolen from him. I love reading the Dyfi news, thank you Marion for making it possible for us to see it here. xxxx Rosy.
ROSY – I can’t wait for Dyfi’s webcam to go live – mind you, how I am going to fit in everything in the day, I really don’t know!
Marion x
Same here too pet,,
can’t wait,,,will be lovely to finally see the Dyfi,,
