I’ve just seen an advert for Oreos and I remembered that I read the other week that some people call Belted Galloway cattle ‘Oreos’. @jennyc. Linda would would be more familiar with the biscuits, I think, than we are.

Googled Oreos, didnt know what it was, and yes can now understand the Belted Galloway cattle being called Oreos.

    • HI ERICA, yes you are right about the Oreo Cows, lots about them on the web, I’d never heard it before. Looks like it might have originated in USA but also what some call them in Dumfries & Galloway. http://www.cattleforsale.org/tag/oreo-cows
There are some brown and white ‘belties’ locally, they look even more like Oreos, I quite like that name for them.

@jennyc Your post has also reminded me that last week travelling from the hospital we saw a large herd of cows of a breed I didn’t recognise. They were black with a large white band round the middle. I looked them up – Belted Galloways. I don’t know why I hadn’t spotted them before now but this was a particularly large herd and very noticeable.

@jennyc My book on Water Voles has just arrived and it opened at the page on Cromford Canal where sadly none have been reported since 2013.

    • Oh that is so sad ERICA, no voles on Cromford Canal, it won’t be the same without them. Thanks for letting me know.

Good morning everyone, It is late Saturday night here and about to get some wicked electrical storms. Guess now that the cable and internet seem fine, the storm will take it down again and I’m hoping to watch the French Open and another game in the Pittsburgh Penguin championship series.

Jenny@jennyc Thank you for the link on the origin of…[Read more]

    • Thank you LINDA for the big smile on my face. Elise is gorgeous.
I have some antibiotic eye drops, recommended by the Pharmacist at the chemist shop I go to, as it appears I have an infection in the right eye which is making the eye ball sore. It started on Friday, and I called in to the chemist yesterday. Drops every 2 hours for 2 days, then…[Read more]

      • LORNA, Good your Pharmacist was able to recommend an antibiotic drop. Eye pain can be so debilitating but then again, nothing seems to stop you. Hope the discomfort is short-lived.

    • Another lovely video clip. thanks LINDA – Elise is gorgeous and what a laugh she has!

      • Hello MARION. I just hope the tickle sessions are short and infrequent. I had an Uncle that used to tickle me and all my cousins. We hated it and now I have a real problem when I see a baby/child tickled. I have been biting my tongue trying to keep silent. You probably know that feeling. Hope it won’t be too long before you see Emilia again.

        • Oh yes, LINDA – definitely know that feeling of biting my tongue and keeping quiet!! We see Emilia on Skype two or three times a week, which is lovely, but won’t see her in person until the end of July unfortunately. Are you seeing Elise again soon?

    • Thank you for the video clip of Elise. There’s not much better than a baby’s laugh x

      • FIONA, I don’t know about that. It has to be pretty special to have a Champion Kitty who just “cleaned up” on all the ribbons at the Show. Congratulations to “Ollie” and to you for all the hard work. Gee, I hope I have his name right…..I just said above that my memory is far from what it used to be. Please forgive me, if I have that wrong.

21:18 @jennyc , I was at Loch Doon today and I was looking through the pages of “The Galloway Ranger” and on page 9 “Fishing & Horse riding” there is a section under “Lochs” .There is ” Loch of the Lowes”(Fly preferred) brown trout. It lies just north of Newton Stewart – have you heard of it?
