@rosy My public library gives me access to magazine subscriptions free on my tablet, (probably can do it on PC too). One of the ones I download is BBC Music. This month’s which has just arrived has Eric Whitacre on the cover. I only know his music, well, his name too, because of you. There is an interview inside with Joyce DiDonato as well.

    @rosy Any better?

    • How kind of you to get back to me at this time of the evening ERICA. No, I’m afraid I’m still getting the same message. It seems that the only links I can follow here are those via the BBC topics. I’m afraid I don’t know what else to do other than switching the modem off and on and the same with this laptop. I have tried accessing ‘help’. but…[Read more]

ROSY@rosy Had a brief exchange with Maggie on Facebook and she wanted me to tell you that she still has the Antique Cat.

Hope all Villagers are well. Guest arrived and so did the roofers! All animals are having “tizzy fits”, esp Ziggy. Hope this is over soon. I feel like someone is banging the wall right next to my head!
    The weather is…[Read more]

    • Thanks for all the leaf info LINDA, it makes perfect sense. Our two small acers have just turned a brilliant red. As regards the renovations the same thought passed my mind as OH took to his bed with a headache when I suggested we started packing stuff away In readiness!! Never mind it will be good!

    • The article I read about leaf color change specifically mentioned the British Isles and your more moderate temps. Also, different leaves have different sugar content which explains the glorious Sugar Maples.

    • I hope your roof doesnt take too long to do LINDA. Poor Ziggy and Charlie and the cats. I think most pets dont like things happening that arent the norm.

    • LINDA!We have been out, bought packing boxes and are ready to clear the decks for the builders. It shouldn’t take too long.

Good evening Villagers, its been a lovely day if a bit chilly, but it helped with the paint drying and all the walls were finished by 2-30 this afternoon. Cleaned up, shook out the dust sheets, put the vacuum around the walking area, then went for a lovely shower.. Afterwards had a cuppa, and then went and waited at the bus stop for the 4pm…[Read more]

@rosy Thanks for the lovely accounts and photos of your visit to Sherborne. I much enjoyed them.

@rosy I’ve only just read your holidays pieces and seen the photos. Thanks very much. I enjoyed them. It strikes me that as well as looking a lovely place scenically Finland seems a very civilised country, in the best sense of the word.

    • Yes ERICA, it is. I’m glad you enjoyed the account of my trip. The lovely town of Ekenas is very much a place of culture with concerts, theatre productions, quite a few choirs and a flourishing Literature Society, an excellent library and small but very attractive shops with top class products to tempt us all. There are also many…[Read more]

@rosy I am very glad I told you. I enjoyed it too. The tanks and guns didn’t do a great deal for me nor the ghostly things flitting about etc but although I know the story and listen to my CD often the subtitles were good to have and I enjoyed the singing, not least of the chorus, and it was a treat to be able to watch. I used the code…[Read more]

    • I agree with you ERICA Re: the tanks and floaty things. I must say I always prefer performances in the traditional costumes and staging. I don’t understand about using the digital coding. If you have a minute, could you tell me how to do it please.

      • Go to the link we watched it on. I am putting again here in case you’ve mislaid it and i hope the others won’t mind because I think it will bring up the whole still video picture again. Here goes.…[Read more]

        • Many thanks ERICA. i’ll have a go.

          • Here comes the ‘pain’ ERICA. I can see the orange logo but there is no code above it. If I click onto the logo, up comes a Google page asking for my e-mail etc., Is that what you found? Don’t rush to answer this because I’m sure that you are more than busy. I’ll keep trying!

            • Sorry, Rosy, only just seen this. Above the logo is a hyperlink line which says digital programme. That’s what you click. Get back to me if you can’t see it and I’ll look again myself.

@rosy If you didn’t get chance to log on last night to Il Trovatore it is available on the ROH YouTube channel. It starts 14 mins in.

    • Wow, thank you ERICA for these links! I had no idea that one could watch opera from the Royal Opera House on line. You can be sure that I shall be glued to Il Trovatore tomorrow. I’m thrilled too that I can catch up on Die Meistersinger from Glyndebourne, my favourite opera company. I expect that ‘Il Trovatore’ will be broadcast in our…[Read more]

      • I see that there is a code to be entered for Il Trov. but as there is a good catchup period I shall check that out and see how it works. I watched part of Die Meistersinger last night live and it was easy to view but I did not have the time to watch it all. So I am going to watch this weekend.

      • I wrote a piece a couple of years ago about my favourite music. It all had to be music I should want on my desert island and some was also music which brought the music back memories. One opera was Il Trov and the particular piece was Marilyn Horne singing Stride la Vampa, wonderful because I love her voice and the words are so tragic but the…[Read more]

      • Isn’t autocorrect a brute? If you have read below before I corrected it I did of course mean ‘Stride la Vampa’ and not ‘Striding’.

After sleeping most of yesterday, I have recovered. Just beginning to try to catch up with all the posts and pictures.

@Rosy, Below the beautiful “Wildlife in Pictures”, is a block you can click on to see beautiful photos taken in memory of the Battle of Somme. Then below those are several blocks with more photos. I read with interest your…[Read more]

    • Thank you LINDA for your reminder of further pictures and live videos from the deeply moving commemoration of the Battle of the Somme. The massed plants I saw the Hoplia coerulea beetle on are Rubus Ulmifolius, the elm-leaved bramble. Today I took a walk and saw the same or another beetle, which is not known in UK, in almost exactly the same place. I was lucky to see it anyway as I was taking a photo of the pink flowers, still pursuing my project this holiday of identifying the…[Read more]

    • Thank you ERICA. It would seem the shrub/bush is a type of Blackberry.
I wonder if the Beetles eat any of the fruit?
Looking forward to seeing your wild flower photos, and if we can identify them (research will be good for the brain), before you name them. Competition coming to the Village soon πŸ™‚

      • Good idea. I can’t upload any now as the laptop, since the Hotzone was out of action, won’t access the Internet. I have taken quite a lot on my phone which doesn’t have the best camera, tho’ the pictures look good on the screen.

    • As Lorna said – looking forward to seeing some of your wild flower pictures perhaps when you get back.

    • Thanks ERICA – look forward to seeing your photos in due course

It’s ‘White Rabbits’ first thing tomorrow. I think it was @rosy who had a slightly different saying on the 1st March. Can you remind me what it was, please.

    • Hello ERICA, lovely to see you here again. Yes, on March 1st, I always say ‘Hares’ just once. Tomorrow though, it will be ‘White Rabbits’ repeated three times as usual! You’d think that by now I might have grown out of such childish practices!

      • Thank you. Like you I am sure, I am not remotely superstitious but I do the things my mother did and said, though she wasn’t superstitious either! I also always say ‘Good morning, Mrs Sheep’ to the first sheep of the day. There aren’t any immediately around but we don’t have to go far in any direction to see them. I admit that I do feel slightly…[Read more]

Mornin’, Temps seem more civilized this morning, at least it’s not “painful” out there. Hope all feeling poorly have seen improvement.

@rosy Antiques Roadshow is on i-player now ROSY, I am watching it.

    • ROSY, I think that it could have been an Osprey on the last item filmed on the Antiques Road Show. Checking as to when it was filmed, found it was in June. I did a Google Earth trip, and I would think that it could have been (if it was an Osprey) one of the Glaslyn Osprey`s, maybe Aran, on a fishing trip.

    @rosy
I first saw Fledermaus many years ago at Covent Garden and vowed to learn enough German to understand the jailer next time. Of course I never did. I think you do speak German. I have only seen Carlos Acosta on live event cinema but I admire him very much. I saw him interviewed on TV by Parkinson where he danced too.
    I watched several…[Read more]

    • Erica – that made me smile. I learnt German at school instead of French. As a spoken language I found it so much easier but we only learnt the basics most of which I have now forgotten. Perhaps Rosy can run a Village course!

      • When I was a student our flatmate who was reading German tried to teach my friend and me. We sat on the sofa and she terrified us by pointing and making us speak. We were so frightened we couldn’t take more than a couple or so lessons. However, after 45 years I can still say, with a certain amount of confidence, ‘Ich fliege nich nach Wien, Ich…[Read more]

        • Ummm, I have never done any languages, as they werent taught at my Secondary School, so I have no idea what you were taught ERICA. Like JACK`s, I would love to know, and hope its not to rude to post πŸ™‚

We much enjoyed the performance last night. @rosy it was English Touring Opera. We attended the pre show talk given by the conductor which was interesting. They are on a small-theatre tour and so much of the chorus was cut as well as musicians. Nevertheless it was a fine performance, witty translation, interesting staging and most importantly some…[Read more]

    • Glad you enjoyed the opera ERICA, you asked me about living in Matlock, I was born in Wensley and lived in and around Matlock after we were married.
