The Common Buzzard is one of the most visible of Britain’s raptors. It is now the most widespread and commonest bird of prey in the UK. It is large with broad rounded wings. It has a short head and tail (that fans out when gliding and soaring). They can differ in colour from dark brown to much paler variations. They all have dark wing tips and a finely barred tail. They make a plaintive mewing call that sounds similar to a cat.

It breeds on the edges of woodlands, but usually hunts over open land. It eats mainly small mammals but will come to carrion. It is a great opportunist, and has a varied diet of pheasant, rabbit, other small to medium mammals. It can be seen walking over newly ploughed fields looking for insects and worms. They have incredible strength.

Buzzards dont normally form flocks, but several may be seen together in good habitat. They are extremely territorial and will occasionally fight if one strays into the other’s territory, dominant displays of aggression will normally see the interloper off. Pairs mate for life. To attract a mate, or impress his existing mate, the male performs a spectacular ritual aerial display before the beginning of Spring. This is known as “the roller coaster”.
