Good Morning Villagers This morning is part 3 of our Jill’s holiday to Scotland. Wish I was there, the lovely photo’s bring it all to life.Monday’s itinerary read “Take a trip out to the coastal town of Oban” ….Well it was a lovely day so after breakfast we set off for Oban. Along the way Bob the Driver suggested to us that as an extra he would like to take those of use that were interested, to the Isle of Seil where we would see the House of Trouser! Intrigued I put up my hand! Inevitably there were people who just wanted to wander around the town of Oban, so they were dropped off and about half of us continued on with Bob and enjoyed the very pretty scenic drive to Atlantic Bridge, the crossing between the mainland and the Isle of Seil. Looking to our left over the bridge along the inlet we could just about make out in the distance the Atlantic Ocean, making this a true island. We stopped just after the bridge where there was a very tiny “art gallery” which consisted of mainly hand-made postcards depicting the Clachan Bridge and the pub called Tish -an – Truish Inn or ”The House of Trouser” and we got out to take photos. The Inn got its name because it was used by islanders after the Jacobite Rising of 1745 to change from their trousers into the forbidden KILT when returning to the island. Clachan Bridge – The Bridge over the Atlantic – was built in 1791. The rare purple flower growing on the bridge is the Fairy Foxglove (conspicuous by its absence).
Moving on, we drove the length of the Isle with some amazingly picturesque scenery, and finally reached the little white and slate village of Ellenabeich which is a charming fishing port and artists paradise. We were welcomed by the owner of the Gallery who treated us to a tasting of his home made “tablet” a kind of rich buttery fudge – yummy. We had about an hour and a half there to look around, sample the goodies in the pubs and café’s, look out over the harbour wall to the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, and marvel at the impressive cliffs with the suicidal sheep grazing far too near the edge! Watched a family of crows playing overhead and a peregrine flew through really fast scattering several hares that I had previously not even noticed! All too soon we set off back the way we had come, back to Oban in time for lunch, and a look around the town.
We had about 2 hours in Oban so, not really wanting to look around yet more of the same shops, I decided to take a boat trip out to see the seals! There was a boat leaving at 2.30, so after making sure I would get back by 3.30, I boarded the little fishing boat, along with two couples, one with two enormous St.Bernard dogs, and the other couple with a Westie! Off we went at a good lick out of the harbour, and were soon at sea, rocking about in the swell, and blowing in the sunshine and wind. After about 20 minutes the boat slowed and in front of us was a small hump of an island, where about 20 or so seals were lazing about in the sunshine, some of them with pups. They were very curious and some slid into the water and bobbed about watching us – very cute. It was a bit difficult taking photos while the boat was rocking about! While at sea, besides the seals I saw a guillemot flying low over the water, and a gannet, and back in the harbour my now favourite hooded crows.
Tuesday was supposed to be our “day of leisure” and the driver’s day off. But Bob was anxious that we should see as much as possible so he suggested, for a tenner a head, that he would contact another driver for the day, and become one of us on a day trip to Stirling, if anyone was interested. Most of us said yes please! So after breakfast we set off for the long drive back through the Loch Lomond National Park and The Trossachs, stopping off at Callender for a short break, where we were introduced to “Hamish” the largest male Highland Bull we had ever seen! UN-obligingly though, he decided not to stand up, probably because it was starting to rain, but posed nicely for us to take his picture! Set off again, passing Doune Castle, and soon the Wallace Monument Tower came into view, along with our first glimpse of Stirling Castle perched high up above the town. Craig ( the relief driver) dropped us off in town and told us what time to be back, and David and Alan immediately raced off to find the Tourist Information office, while the rest of us that wanted to see the Castle set off at a leisurely pace up the steep hill. On the way I stopped at a little shop and bought a Bridie (pastry like our Cornish Pastie) to have with my lunch. It had now stopped raining and by the time I reached the Castle I was a bit warm and puffed out! Stirling Castle was amazing! Very well laid out and full of interesting nooks and crannies and I spent a very enjoyable couple of hours exploring. Took loads of photos, and the view from the ramparts was spectacular looking over the whole town and beyond, where once there were battlefields where Robert The Bruce claimed his land.

Good evening Villagers – well I had a bit of time spare at work today so I was able to read all the posts and make some notes along the way. I’m home now – so here goes!
MAD(Tom) I know what you mean about taking our surroundings for granted as I live on the edge of Epping Forest. Although I do go walking there a lot, its always nice when visitors to the area say how lovely it is! I didn’t go round the town of Stirling apart from M&S for some fruit, but thought the Castle was exceptional! Loved your sparrowhawk!
ERICA and PAULA thank you for your kind comments on my holiday – I enjoyed writing it up too – and MARION I’m glad I am bringing back some old memories for you!
JOYCE – I hadn’t heard of the House of Trouser either – thought the driver was having a joke with us, but no, there’s a plaque there and its true! Have a great trip on the Rutland Belle this evening ( I expect you are there as I write this!). I hope the weather is clement – I’m sure Tony has enjoyed his little train journey too!
JACK thank you, and yes the Isle of Seil is well worth a visit – Ellenabeigh is a very pretty little fishing village, a bit touristy but still nice to look around.
ANGELA – glad you liked my holiday snaps – fancy almost seeing your holiday cottage on one of my pics! Good to hear the news that Peter is clear on the bronchospy and good luck with the further investigations.
FIONA Not having been to Edinburgh Castle I can’t compare them, but I was certainly very impressed with Stirling Castle!
JOHANNA hello – and thank you for your comments – glad you are enjoying my holiday!
As I said before, writing about it and finding pics to go with the story brings it all back for me and I feel like I am there again – I am certainly going to book another L&G holiday next year – maybe to a different location. But I can thoroughly recommend the Loch Awe trip as just fantastic!
OK going to get a bite to eat now then watch some Olympics – I was able to watch the show jumping this afternoon on my computer at work – shame about the Brits only coming 6th and 7th but well done to Ireland getting the Bronze!
ttfn – back a bit later, love Jill xxx
JILL This is the link to the cottage
http://www.innish.com/seil.html
I forgot to say Hamish has his own page on facebook.!!!!!!!
thanks Angela thats very interessting! I remember seeing that cottage too! Its a lovely little island isn’t it!
Good evening dear Villagers. I see that there is no-body on the nest over at the Lowes just at present, but over in Estonia, such a sad sight of just one Osprey – the youngest of the three, standing all alone in what sounds like heavy rain, with neither of its siblings to cuddle up to as they have both fledged – such a sorry sight.
Have been out all the morning and had a visitor this afternoon, so not had time to read the posts yet, or indeed the next instalment of your Scottish holiday JILL – I am going to repair that at this very moment, so see you all later.
JAN, once again, your account of your super holiday has been such a joy to read, especially when there are such lovely photos to go with it. I must confess that I had not even heard of the Isle of Seil, I too would have gone on that trip rather than staying in Oban, pleasant as that town is. How clever of you to have managed to fit in the boat trip to see the seals – trust it wasn’t too small a craft bearing in mind there there those two large dogs on board! Of all the photos you have brought us in this account, how I love Hamish and his friend! Highland cattle are so photogenic aren’t they.
I’m so glad you decided to visit Stirling Castle on Bob’s day off. As you may remember, I was there during the week I spent in Perth, and apart from our wonderful get together at the Lowes and seeing Lady, Laddie and tiny Rocket, I think my Stirling visit was the highlight of the week. I too took a photo from the ramparts – didn’t turn out as perfect as yours, but I shall never forget just how far one could see. Reading about your visit took me straight back there. Thank you JILL for posting Jan’s holiday here for us.
ANGELA Wonderful news that Peter’s broncoscopy showed all clear within his lungs – what a relief for you both. He must be so glad to have that ‘treatment’ over with. I hope you are now both treating yourselves to something nice – a glass of wine perhaps, or a special supper.
MARION thank you for you Dyfi updates. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they will have good news emitting from Einion’s satellite tag – so worrying for them all. On top of that, Nora might have left them, hope she may reappear just once more.
I found the link about the Swiss sheep interesting – I hadn’t realised that wolves were such a problem in that country. It would be so good if those special collars really do work, especially for those farmers with only small flocks and no sheep dogs to guard them.
SUSAN hi. I love your video clip of Rocket chirping so prettily. If such a thing as an Osprey choir existed, I think he would definitely be with the tenors! Thank you for your other lovely photos and video clips; it’s such a comfort to know that when I have to be away for most of the day, I can return to my laptop and gaze upon those beautiful birds while we still have them with us. Is your shoulder better now, and is all your dental work completed? Hopefully the answer will be ‘yes’ on both counts.
Whilst on the subject of ‘afflictions’, has anyone here heard how Peter (Wild Canvas) is getting on? Perhaps he and Claire are off camping somewhere.
Hey ho, time for eye drops and some supper – wish I didn’t always feel peckish at this time of the evening – not good for the figure!!
Evening all, very quiet in here tonight
CLIP……INTRUDERS ABOUT 14.52pm
A pair of ospreys dive-bombing blue44
Thanks Susan for this clip – I saw a bit of it as it was happening but having no sound on my work computer I couldn’t hear Rocket alarm calling – Lovely clips and photos today – thank you again – you do work hard for us! xxx
Thanks Susan – I did too Jill – it was obvious that an intruder was around but two – no wonder Rocket was mantling – when you think a few weeks ago he would crouch down now he is acting like an adult – almost!
Super clip Susan x
Ohhhh Rosy Rosy – you and your J’s!! As I know you know it was ME that was on holiday and JAN that brought it onto the post so brilliantly! LOL No worries my dear – we all know what you meant!
Yes I’m afraid its going to be ENS for all our nests soon – not looking forward to that time at all. Still we have had a marvellous time with our chicks this year and experience lots of highs and lows, (one of the highs being of course seeing Lady and Laddie in the flesh at our meeting in May) …..and we can still watch the Hellgate Three for a few more weeks as they aren’t yet up to the fledging stage yet! They are getting big though and starting to do their wingercising and flapping poor Iris in the face many times!
Yes the boat trip to see the seals was in a smallish fishing boat – plenty of room in spite of the large dogs who were kept well under control by their owners. Actually there were only 7 of us passengers and two boatmen plus the dogs so we all had plenty of room to move about and get on the right side for photos, although it was very rocky and windy so standing up was a bit of an effort! I’m glad you also thought the same as me about Stirling Castle – I wish I could have stayed longer there…. but I did manage to get round most of the exhibition halls and even went into the kitchens and dungeons! I’m sure your photos are every bit as good as mine – the scenery and views are spectacular aren’t they!
And as for Hamish – well he was the highlight of that day as well – even though he remained sitting down we could still imagine his size compared with his friend sitting next to him! A very imposing bull indeed!
Hope you enjoy your supper – snacking is all I can manage when its hot like it is tonight! Off to get a nice bowl of blueberry ice cream now and watch some more olympics! Bye for now – love Jill xxxx
Loved your report Jill, thanks too Jan. You certainly got the best of the coast, don’t know if you knew the Late Mum of Princess Diana lived on the Isle Of Seill, she was buried at the large Church at the bottom of Dunollie. It as you said so beautiful there, glad you got to the Isle of Seals, by Oban. What Date was Part Two posted?, sorry I missed it. Glad from part one You survived th Ceilidh.”LOL”.
Your Pictures brought back happy Memories too for me, When I was about 7 or 8 Grandad took me below Only Bridge over the Atlantic in a Rowing Boat. xxx
LOL yeah I know, someone mentioned that! I don’t do Facebook so didn’t know before! xx
Maggie I think Part 2 was posted last Wednesday. Yes I survived the Ceilidh – I just couldnt spell it! lol. No I didn’t know about Princess Diana’s mum being buried at Dunollie – we weren’t there long enough to go everywhere so we just headed to Ellenabeigh and back. Worth another visit though and spend longer there! xxx
Update from Lowes for today:
http://blogs.scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/osprey/
From Dyfi:
“Can you name all four?
20:00 Still no sign of Nora, over 24 hours now. Maybe she has gone this time.
Still no data for Einion, will hopefully be tomorrow now.
COMPETITION. We had four non-osprey species on the nest this afternoon, you would have seen them if you were watching the live streaming. Here’s a short video of all four if you missed them.
The first to identify all four will win an Olympic Gold medal in the shallow water mullet fishing category. You need all four to win. Answers in the morning.”

Well whether I can name them all or not wish LoTL could get that quality picture and the same visitors – 1 Kestrel, 2 young ?peregrine but not sure, 3 wren and 4 probable willow warbler though without song difficult. Anyway will check site tomorrow. Guess if I should have payed more attention to DFYI as well this year but barely managed to keep up LoTL.

Thanks Marion – that was so interesting about the shark – lets hope it makes it way back out to sea again and lovely to know the dolphins are still coming to Cardigan Bay to have their calves xxx
Thanx Marion. der der der der. Jaws theme tune
What a fantastic experience for them all. Trust it found its way to deeper water xx

TO EVERYONE
I spoke to Peter earlier on tonight and he ask me to let you know that he still isn’t very good and still having fainting spells. Which is being looked into. He thanks you for all your lovely wishes and thoughts and is sorry he hasn’t been about, but is asking after you all. I have told him to make sure he takes care and we are all thinking of him and come back when he can
Thank you for the news of Peter,I was wondering what had happened after his trip to the Lowes.
Thanks Susan – I think we have all been asking after him. I hope they soon find out what is causing the fainting fits – he has been having them for some weeks now so time they got to the bottom of them I would have thought. Glad you gave him our love and good wishes xxx
Dear JILL, if you are still looking in – what can I say!! You won’t believe this, but when I first wrote the blog, I had got it right!!! Then, when I read it back to check for typos, I decided I had got it wrong – take me to the funny farm please, as soon as you can! Bless you for being so pleasant about my changing your name, yet again. My compliments were most definitley sincerely meant! Wish I lived near you, that Blueberry ice cream sounds so yummy!
Shall now go and read latest Lowes blog – thanks MARION for mentioning it.
LOL dear Rosy – I knew you knew which way round it should have been – it was just amusing that you got it the wrong way round! LOL love you for making me laugh tonight!! You would be most welcome to share my blueberry icecream! – Yes it was very yummy! xxx

©SWT http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes/#
Just found out it is a Female Redstart, who will soon be on its journey to Africa, thanks Peter xx
Amazing to think that it will fly all the way out there, and we worry about our Ospreys getting there and the dangers they have to go through on their journey to Africa
CLIP…..LITTLE BIRD ON THE NEST 12.05PM
Thanks Susan – yes Redstart – you see the way she keeps flicking her tail that is typical of Redstarts and gives you a clue to her identify – the male is a gorgeous bird – I assume he is around somewhere too
cheers Jack xx
Did see redstart on visit up there a year or so ago lovely birds and I was pleased that I managed to ID and confirm with one of the rangers.
CLIP… BOY BLUE44 15.30PM
JULIE if you are looking in – I hope you had a lovely day today and Tim had a great birthday!
Lots of love Me xx

There was a fish delivery at 19.51pm
Lovely pictures Susan – I think Laddie is making Rocket wait for his meals now in the hope he can encourage him to try fishing for himself xxx
I wonder if Deirdre was there today
I think your right Jack xx
At last I can look in. Now for a relaxing 1/2 hour or so. Evening Villagers. First I want to thank Jan for part 3 of JILL`s holiday report.
JILL, I loved the Atlantic Bridge, for its shape and architecture (one and the same thing really) The story of Tish-an-Truish Inn was very interesting and how pretty was that photo of your`s of the Fishermans Cottages, Ellenleigh.
Cor, Hamish is a big lad isnt he, even sitting down. Didnt take a NICK photograph him, or one like him?
The view from Stirling Castle was very emotive with the Wallace Monument Tower in the distance.
Thank you so much for a beautiful story, well told. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Now going to catch up on the days posts.
That should read, ” Didnt NICK take a photograph” ….. not ….. Didnt take a NICK photograph

CLIP…. FISH DELIVERY 19.51PM
CLIP…. HAD BLUE44 ATTEMPTED FISHING AGAIN 10.57AM
I wondered if he had Susan – he certainly seemed to be sorting out his feathers but it didn’t mention it on the Lowes Blog so perhaps you just went for a bath xxx
could have Jack, He certainly seemed as though he was drying his wings and then preening them xx
LORNA

Just looked in at Hellgate. The pic with the chick under her tail looks as though it is dosing, lol xx
Oh off to look Susan
Aren’t they looking great – I love the information Erick gives us – did you see the night shot of the deer
No, where was that Jack?
Meant to say Click to enlarge x
Susan – if you look on their Facebook page down the right-hand side you will find it
Thanks Jack, sorry was feeding the foxes there xx
lol Susan great grabs from Hellgate – yes that one is hiding his head under Iris – thinking I can’t see you so you can’t see me! She is doing a good job of sheltering her chicks but they are all getting so big now! Love this little family – and we’ll be able to watch them for a few more weeks now since they are not yet at fledging stage.
Train passing now

I meant to say earlier that there is a great article in this month’s Bird Watching magazine by John Wright – the guy who takes all the fantastic photos at Rutland Water. He draws too and the article has some drawings and photos to accompany it – all very interesting. I wonder whether Joyce and Tony met him this evening.
PS I have been using my time ‘carless’ to catch up with some gardening but I have been bitten on my eyelid and eyebrow by – I know not what! It has all swollen up – I think I could get O.H. done for GBH! Taken a Clarityn tablet in the hope it will damp down the over-reaction and I hope it does or I won’t see out of it tomorrow. When I was a child I was bitten by a mosquito on my eyelid and had to go to the Eye Infirmary for treatment but hopefully this will go down on its own xxx
Please take care of your bite,IToo ended up with hospital treatment of infected mossy bite xx
maybe it was a midge bit Jack. When mum gets bitten by them she comes out in huge lumps, take care with it being on your eye xxxx
Poor you Jack! I hope the Clarityn makes some improvement but if not then you better get to the docs. There was a plague of flying ants here this evening – ughhhh horrid sticky things get everywhere, the air was thick with them!
Yes it was flying ants day Jan – the gulls love them!
Thanks guys – I will see how my eye is in the morning xxx
SUSAN, looking at your photos of Rocket/Lunan/Boy Blue which you put here at 10.01 p.m. I was struck in the fourth photo down how where ‘our’ boy is looking straight at the camera, very much he looks like his mama – it’s so like her expression in a similar position.
I was interested to read the theory on today’s Lowes blog, that if we can track Rocket’s migration route, it might tell us where Lady goes to, as Rocket will have in-built instinct to follow. It was in the Questions bit below the blog.
Hi Rosy, yes he is just a gorgeous boy. hes going to be a heartbreaker when he grows up Rosy, lol
I read that on the Lowes blogs very interesting xxx
Hope your feeling a little better tonight after your sad news Rosy, Hugs to you xxxx
hi all thanks for youre holiday pictures and story jan i must get up to scotland one day ,i was glad to hear peter is ok and hopefully they can get to the bottom of it all for him ,and jacks what have you been up to getting bitten on youre eye hopefully the clarytin should sort it out for you ,here are two more from bentley woods by the way the one yesterday was a white admiral ,i did see one purple empereror but i was taking a picture of a dragonfly posing for me and stepped forwards and something shot up in front of me you guessed it ,it was a purple emperor but didnt get a picture as it took off towards salisbury about one hundred miles a hour and that was the only one i have seen so far brian.

BRIAN, superb sharp clear photos.

Wonderful pictures,thank you
You will just love Scotland, must say this village makes me homesick at times, then there again it keeps me up to date.xx
Gorgeous dragonfly Brian – how nice ot if to pose for you!
Fantastic picture Brian – my favourite insects.
Caught up at last. JILL, I looked in very early this am and looked at BRIAN and MADS photos. Great photo of the Sparrowhawk from Mad. I took one recently, through the window, but it had its back to me
. BRIAN you have the patience of a saint with the wild life photos you put up. Really stunning ones.
MARION, thank you for the links, and was particularly taken with the pregnant Gorrila.
JOYCE and Tony, hope you enjoyed your Rutland Belle trio this evening.
ANGELA, I am so glad that Peter`s Bronchoscopy found all was well. Now hopefully the other will start to inprove as this is one less worry. Also thank you for the link for the cottage, but also showed the history of the Atlantic Bridge.
SUSAN, thank you for posting about PETER (wildcanvas). We have all been concerned for him and his fainting`s. I do hope investigations are going on to find the cause. Thank you for all the screen captures and video`s, and more especially for the Hellgate photos, thank you, you`re a star.. I havent been anywhere else yet, as late back from a meeting, so came straight here to catch up.
I see that Dyfi think that Nora is on her migration now, so I wish both our Mums, a safe journey to their winter homes.
I am off now for the night. Thank you all for the posts, I really missed being around today, so thank you MARION and SUSAN for all the links.
Goodnight to all still up. Take care all.
night night Lorna, sweet dreams xx
Yes it does look as if Nora is on her way too – wouldnt it be great if she paid a visit to Rutland on her way down and hooked up with cousin Blue12? Then maybe they could catch up with Lady and all travel together LOL……very fanciful I know as ospreys are not flocking birds, which is a shame as it would be lovely to see a group of them all together like a skein of geese flying overhead!!!
Awww that would be great to see Jill, If only
xxx
Yeah wouldn’t it just! thanks again for all your fantastic photos today Susan – you have worked hard for us today! Have a Gold Star!
