Good Morning Villagers
Well what can I say about these strange little creatures!! I have been chuckling away as I have been doing this post. I also found them so fascinating. I hope you enjoy it.
Mudskippers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mudskippers are members of the subfamily Oxudercinae (tribe Periophthalmini[1]), within the family Gobiidae (Gobies). They are completely amphibious fish, fish that can use their pectoral fins to walk on land.[2][3] Being amphibious, they are uniquely adapted to intertidal habitats, unlike most fish in such habitats which survive the retreat of the tide by hiding under wet seaweed or in tidal pools.[4]
Mudskippers are quite active when out of water, feeding and interacting with one another, for example to defend their territories.
They are found in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions,
including the Indo-Pacific and the Atlantic coast of Africa.
Compared with fully aquatic gobies, these fish present a range of peculiar behavioural and physiological adaptations to an amphibious lifestyle. These include:
- Anatomical and behavioural adaptations that allow them to move effectively on land as well as in the water.[3] As their name implies, these fish use their fins to move around in a series of skips. They can also flip their muscular body to catapult themselves up to 2 feet (60 cm) into the air.[5]

- The ability to breathe through their skin and the lining of their mouth (the mucosa) and throat (the pharynx). This is only possible when the mudskipper is wet, limiting mudskippers to humid habitats and requiring that they keep themselves moist. This mode of breathing, similar to that employed by amphibians, is known as cutaneous air breathing.[4] Another important adaptation that aids breathing while out of water are their enlarged gill chambers, where they retain a bubble of air. These large gill chambers close tightly when the fish is above water, keeping the gills moist, and allowing them to function. They act like a scuba diver’s cylinders, and supply oxygen for respiration also while on land.[4]

- Digging deep burrows in soft sediments allow the fish to thermoregulate,[6] avoid marine predators during the high tide when the fish and burrow are submerged,[7] and for laying their eggs.[8]
Even when their burrow is submerged, mudskippers maintain an air pocket inside it, which allows them to breathe in conditions of very low oxygen concentration.
The genus Periophthalmus is by far the most diverse and
widespread genus of mudskipper. Eighteen species have been described.[12][13][14] Periophthalmus argentilineatus is one of the most widespread and well known species. It can be found in mangrove ecosystems and mudflats of East Africa and Madagascar east through the Sundarbans of Bengal, South East Asia to Northern Australia, southeast China and southern Japan, up to Samoa and Tonga Islands.[1] It grows to a length of about 9.5 cm [1] and is a carnivorous opportunist feeder. It feeds on small prey such as small crabs and other arthropods.[15] Another species, Periophthalmus barbarus, is the only oxudercine goby that inhabits the coastal areas of western Africa.[1]
This clip is brilliant and no way long enough.

Oh ere we go again x
Sorry, Jan, I meant to say how much I’d enjoyed your post about the mudskippers. I just loved that video – especially the bit where they spit out the mud pellets! I thought they were cute little things, and anything but stick-in-the-muds (groan). Did anyone hear the lapwings calling in the background?
Oops, 18.15.
lily & hope active wee cubs are adorable
Forgive me if this has already been post, not had time to read back post as yet – Osprey spotted N. Yorks at 5.15 – keep looking everyone
18.41 great news thanks Shelagh7Y
Drat missed it!
Great news, Shelagh! They’re moving northwards, everyone.
Thank you Shelagh that is great to hear, let me know if any are sighted over East Yorkshire. xxx
Just noticed Loch Garten webcam went live on the 18th – sorry if this is old news, I just dont have the time to read all the posts.
19.59
Hi Shelagh at least a few organisations are letting people watch the web cams for the return of ospreys!!!! xx
Will tell you about the Theatre later but just wanted to say see you were talking about the Supermoon – I have just loaded a picture of it taken a few minutes ago in my garden. Do look if you missed it.
Off to walk the dogs – back later and hopefully catch up with you all.
20.30

Hi Jacq, someone stole the moon here! To borrow from Pink Floyd, it’s “obscured by clouds!”
Oh poor you Nicky, has someone stolen your moon. Boo Hoo
20.55
sorry
21.30 I’ve just had a look at your moon photo, Jack – it’s beautiful! Thanks for posting it. All we saw here was a faint glow behind the clouds.
How about emailing offices on weekdays, that has given more success in the past than mailing over public holidays and weekends. in my experience, I think there must be an automatic bounce back when the offices are closed at those times.
JAN and MARION M, thank your for your invites. I am not coping with yet another method of communication and you will be added to my pending file which sounds awful but i do not understand the need for having a third way of talking yet. I know I will want to speak to you both but pm will do the job fine until I have understood better.
I wil have egg on my face if requests are withdrawn after a period of days. I have today been assisted to join another forum (had to wait for months till I met the blog master today to ask his help!!) and note the offer to join is only for 30 days, after that if I have not accepted they withdraw the offer !!!
Would anyone like to explain why we need the friends bit here in addition to open blog and private pm? what is its purpose? I am missing something seeing as so many think it is a wonderful idea..
Signed, ‘not very experienced in social networking , obviously’ Thank you..
hi Nuphar don’t worry about the friend requests. I don’t know what they do either although I’ve accepted requests. Like you’ve said before we are all friends are we not.
.
I’ve sent my email today and its not been returned yet so i presume its waiting to be picked up on Monday. Good point though about emails being bounced back.
Same as you Ann and Nuphar but there must be a reason for it so have gone along with it!
Hi Nuphar, the friends requests will probably just be included in part of the software, dont worry about it, just use your PM’s if you want a private conversation or message.
I sent an e-mail on Thursday and received a msg on fri morning from rking saying that she will look into my questions and get back to me later on, on friday…… still waiting.
I am also in the middle of composing a letter to the head Simon Milne, mind you it will probably take me ove the weekend to finish it and tidy it up, maybe I should leave it the way it is LOL
Totally disgusted to hear about the nest camera
now. STW are getting so far up their own backside now. Just dont understand it. Their other sites haven’t been copyrighted, no mention of it or anything on it, although you can’t download, but there is no mention of not taking pictures etc.
Susan, they will have their reasons for not doing all these things and reasons for not telling us why. We must just be patient. We were spoiled rotten last year, that is the real trouble!!
I share very much in your disappointment, i feel for the NA people and those at work who relied on super clips done by the faithful ready to press button observers.
It’s okay, Nuphar – I had the same reaction as you re the friends requests, being a novice at social networking, like yourself!
Hi All
We have had a problem with the registration process for this blog, which meant we could not get any new users. I have now fixed the problem so if you know anyone who has tried to sign up and has had problems please let them know we are accepting new users now. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Peter
Will do Peter. Thanks
I’m at my brothers. My sister in law has had to go into hospital. The baby is due today but she’s got blood loss and they want to monitor her. My step daughter in nottingham has been in labour since yesterday afternoon. Her waters went this morning but she’s working through it in the labour suite.
I hope all goes well Ann.
Just had a little play, and managed to upload some pictures, AND change my avatar! No pics of me, so please welcome Buffy to the blog!! lol
No pics of you Nicky, have you not sharpened those horns yet
Horns?! You calling me “Old Nick?!” lol
well hello buffy
. Any news and I’ll keep you updated.
Hello Buffy – it will take me ages to recognise you now Nick!! Well not you exactly
Ps Am I the only one who spends ages looking for a suitable Emoticon only to enter a totally unsuitable one!!
There’ll be a few clues on the 15th May Jacq, and as I’m a bloke, it’ll narrow things down, but you’ll probably hear me before you see me!!

Hi Ella, Bridie looks gorgeous! Just love Labs!
he sounds just like Jim Royle. MY
hello buffy have you met bridie yet?
21.25 Gosh Ann, you certainly have your hands full. I am sure everything will go fine with both your sister in law and your step daughter.
Hi Ann, hope all goes well for your Sister in Law, I am sure it will. Your step daughter has been in labour since yesterday, Hopefully it wont be much longer for her, fingers crossed
21.29
Ann – what a nervous time for you and your family – hopefully news from Nottingham before morning – fingers crossed all goes well. (a rose would be nice here)
The race is on to see which baby pops out first! Good luck to them both, Ann. xxx
Ann – your sister in law and step daughter are in my prayers and thoughts. Now go and spend time with your family. We will still be here when you come back.

I’m looking after my two nephews who are as high as kites lol

Thank you. Never rains but it pours lol
Hi
I have added a translator at the top right of the page. If you get any one who speaks another language please point them to the translator then you will be able to talk to anyone regardless of their country of origin. ospreys are one of the most cosmopolitan birds of prey found on every continent other than the frozen ones
Nice one, thank you. will certainly help
I can get the site to translate into Urdu but I cant get it to sho the time next to comments
tee hee. Thats funny.
Peter – whatever will you come up with next. It looks very comprehensive – tempted to press one of them but resisted in case the whole blog turned foreign
oh jack!! I dare you. Go on. Lol
I have tested it and it changes everything into the language you select if you want to learn another language
Thanks Peter, I am sure it will come in very useful and keep pm’s down
Mind you, by the look of some of these languages we’d have to ask the person to describe their national flag in order to locate the right one!
It’s all Greek to me!!! lol
It’s all Greek to me!!! lol

D’OH!!! LOL
21.37
Nick just checked out your Album – the wood carving is amazing – presumably it is somewhere on the island.
No pictures of Hen Harriers yet though!!
I’m off with my wildlife group tomorrow for a day at somewhere called Alkeborough Flats (I think) never been before so not sure what to expect but apparently it can have raptors over the mud flats. Just have to see what is around.
how do you see pictures
Ella click on the persons name, then look at their album
Hi Jacq, I’ve a few more of the carvings, there’s 2 of them in a field in Sulby Glen, which is to the north of the Island – I’d not been through there in over 12 months so hadn’t seen them. They were carved into existing tree stumps literally where they stand, and were apparently done last July as part of the backdrop for a mini music festival held over a weekend.
I saw my first Hen Harrier last sat. but had no chance to take a picture! My plan today, was to head out there late afternoon to catch them as they come into roost, but I neither checked the batteries, nor did I take the spares out with me!! So that plan was scrubbed! There wasn’t much on show in the areas I visited, but there was a cracking flying display from about 50 Jackdaws!!
23.44
I have seen wood carvings similar before but that one is so detailed – a real work of art.
I am always doing that, Nick, forgetting to charge batteries – so easy to forget. Have you looked at the moon picture – I took it through my scope.
eagles being fed just now
Thanks Ella – the parents are so tender with the chicks more than can be said for the chicks themselves – poor Nr. 3 has learnt to keep his head down!
i just love the look on the mothers face. so tender.
21.51 Nick I love the Gandalf carving!
10.22
Nearly crashed the car when I spotted the carvings as I drove past the field! I’ll upload a couple more shots of them!

Hi Guys
Sorry to be the bearer of some more bad news, but I have spoken to Lainey. She was up at the loch today and wanting to know when the next lot of books were coming in as she wanted some more.
She was told that there is no more being printed. Jonathan doesn’t know why.
I know it is another kick, but I dont think anymore can happen now, they have taken the lot away now
Sorry. Just gutted for those who haven’t got one yet
got someone on another forum desperate for a copy. I hated telling them that that was it. Such a shame.
I know Ann there is still a lot that was wanting more and some that haven’t got one yet.
i needed another 2 copies
I wanted two more books. How much more are they going to throw at us.
Sat here thinking of un-stitching the SWT logo from my sweat shirt and just leaving the Osprey and fish. After all the hard work Shirley put into that book and was making plans for the next one. I am totally gutted for her. I cannot put down here what I think of SWT. They are going to loose so many memberships which is a shame. After all it is supposed to be for the wildlife, something they seem to have forgotten!!!
lol

Can’t believe they are not printing any more books. I returned one to the centre at the begining of March as I had a duplicate copy sent to me! Suppose it’s been sold already.
I was hoping to stay up to watch the Tudors but the bottle of merlot has other ideas! Thank goodness for sky+. Night all, see you tomorrow.

It is good, isn’t it. Did you like the one of Billie Piper
Yes I did, Emma’s extremely talented!
Aye, Ann, I’m going in for about 5, so hopefully back home before 7!
Well off to bed, night night girls!

Night Night Nick, sweet dreams
See you tomorrow
11.09 PM and alls well

11.10 p.m. I know it’s late, but I just have to comment on the latest news that the SWT aren’t printing any more of that wonderful BOOK! Could it be that they think they won’t have time to pack them all up and send them out from the Loch of the Lowes? I can’t help thinking that they are making a mistake because it would have brought in so much more money to go towards the Osprey chick tagging wouldn’t it. I’m so sorry for all those who won’t now have the delight of seeing and reading the BOOK. I keep returning to re-read so many beautiful and equally amusing poems and gaze again at the marvellous photos. Perhaps if enough people ask for them, those in charge at SWT might change their minds I do hope so.
I know Rosy it is jsut awful to do this. I quite agree with you it was making money and so many wanted one and want more, I can’t understand them either. They mentioned on one of the pages that they are looking for donations to satellite track lowes ospreys chicks for this year and need another £18,000 as the project is costing £27,000 cant remember what the odds where.
I know I could run off some kind of book with the poems in it, but obviously it wouldn’t be such a good standard as I would only be able to use a come binding machine. Just gutted for them who are now going to miss out on one now
Right I am off to bed, I hope you have a fairly restful night Ann, Sleep tight xxx

night Jan. I am here for the duration
Night Night Jan, sweet dreams. See you tomorrow
xx
